We have this little patch in the front yard, beneath an ancient Weeping Mulberry that has never had a purpose. For a while, it was weedy, then covered with bark mulch, but never utilized for anything beneficial.

Two years ago, I took out all the old dirt and replaced it with good garden soil, and while MLW was off managing the stalls at the World Show, I bought a ton of spring bulbs. I was planning to plant them while she was gone and when March rolled around say, “Lo, where did those come from?” But instead, we did them together. Last spring we had a nice show and planned to fill in the gaps with new bulbs last fall.

Then Jorge the Yard Guy “cleaned up the garden” and removed all the dead stems, removing any hope of seeing where the gaps remained. Undaunted, we bought another ton of bulbs and planted them as best we could.

And now they’re coming up. A bit earlier than last spring, but roughly on time.

Crocuses only at the moment, with Daffodils close behind.
